Fritz Emanuel Dreifuss

Fritz Emanuel Dreifuss spent most of his early life in New Zealand. He graduated from the Otago University School of Medicine in 1950 and trained in neurology at Auckland Public Hospital. He then went to England for further training in neurology at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic, Queen Square, London, and eventually came to the medical faculty of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA. He became professor of neurology at this university in 1968.

Dreifuss’ main interests were in paediatric neurology and neurogenetics, as well as the classification of drug treatment of epilepsies including the corresponding side effects. For more than 25 years he played a leadership role in major achievements of the Epilepsy Foundation, Washington, D.C., as well as in the growth of the international epilepsy movement. From 1981 to 1985 he was secretary general and from 1985 to 1989 president of the International League Against Epilepsy. Fritz Emery Dreifuss was the first American to receive the Ciba-Geigy/International League Against Epilepsy/International Bureau for Epilepsy Epileptology Prize.
