Biography of Bayard Taylor Horton

Bayard Taylor Horton was the son of Thomas (1869-1949) and Ellen (Watkins) Horton (1870-1944). Bayard Horton received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1922, both from the University of Virginia. He served at the Virginia Hospital during the years 1923-1925, and in 1928 he received a Master of Science in Medicine from the University of Minnesota. At that time he came to the Mayo clinic where he was made chief of a department of clinical investigations in 1940.

Bayard contributed numerous articles to many leading medical journals and delivered addresses before many of the principal medical societies in this country. During the years from 1937 to 1957 he examined 1.402 patients who had contacted him for reason of headache. Bayard was a fellow of the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians and during the years of 1943 and 1944 he was president of the Minnesota Society of Internal Medicine. In 1974 he was awarded the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Association for the Study of Headache.

Whatever his shortcomings, he was no pain in the ass.
