Carl-Henry Alström

Carl Henry Alström studied medicine in Stockholm and commenced his career as a research scientist in 1938. In 1942 he received a doctorate for his thesis Mortality in mental hospitals with especial regard to tuberculosis, on the connection between tuberculosis and schizophrenia. From 1940-42 he was Deputy Director of the Institute for Human Genetics at Uppsala, where he conducted genetic research. In 1945, he was made 2nd Assistant Physician at the Neurological Clinic in Serafimerlasarettet Hospital.

In 1948 Alström became associate professor of experimental psychiatry and Director of the Experimental Psychiatry Clinical Laboratory at the Karolinska Institutet. During the decade which followed he carried out extensive investigations into rape, incest and alcoholism, as well as the clinical, social and genetic aspects of epilepsy. Carl Henry Asltröm subsequently became Head of the Department of Psychiatry the Karolinska Institute at St. Görans Hospital in Stockholm and served with distinction from 1961 until his retirement in 1973.
