Mario Campanacci

Mario Campanacci qualified in medicine at the University of Bologna in 1956. He undertook specialist training in orthopaedic traumatology and surgical pathology 1955-1958, and in 1958 joined the staff of the Rizzoli Institute of Orthopaedics, University of Bologna, where he held various positions as assistant until 1965. Campanacci became director of the tumour pathology research laboratory in 1963, and became professor in 1975. In 1980 he became professor extraordinary of clinical orthopaedics and Chief and Chairman of the Postgraduate School. He was promoted to ordinarius in 1983.

Campanacci was a member of no less than 13 international medical societies. In 1987 he organised a meeting at Cavasagra di Vedelago near Treviso at which were present orthopaedic surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and technicians who were interested in bone tumours. As a result of this meeting and under his aegis the European Society of Muscular and Skeletal Oncology (EMSOS) was founded. Campanacci was the first president, 1987-1990.

Campanacci was an outstanding scientist and orthopaedic surgeon who had an active academic career. He was an international authority on bone tumours, and also had a special interest in soft tissue tumours. He published 7 books and more than 370 medical articles.
