Hamilton Southworth

A 1933 medical graduate of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Southworth was an intern at Presbyterian Hospital and joined the faculty of physicians and surgeons in 1937 as assistant in medicine. He became clinical professor of medicine in 1957 and professor of clinical medicine in 1970. He received emeritus status in 1972, and subsequently was a special lecturer in medicine.

Dr. Southworth was active in medical ethics issues and was president of the medical board and member of Presbyterian Hospital's Board of Trustees from 1970 to 1972.

P&S created the Hamilton Southworth endowed professorship in medicine in 1985.
Dr. Southworth was the first chairman of the Department of Medicine's critical care committee, forerunner of the hospital's ethics committee, said Thomas Q. Morris'58, vice dean of the faculty of medicine and senior associate vice president for the health sciences. "He was very proud of that."
Dr. Morris said Dr. Southworth was the only practicing clinical faculty member who served as president of the hospital's medical board. "He was the epitome of the caring physician/clinician."
