Biography of Roland Martin
Roland Martin was the son of Peter Martin (1687-1727), teacher at the University of Uppsala. He studied medicine in Uppsala under Linné and Rosenstein and obtained his medical doctorate on March 8, 1751. He subsequently settled in Halmstad, working partly at Sätra Brunn and partly as a provincial physician in Halland. In 1754 he went to Paris for further studies in anatomy. He served as a prosector under Antoine Petit (1722-1794) and became 1st president of the Société d'émulation.
Upon his return to Sweden he became professor of anatomy in Stockholm in 1756. In 1766 he was also appointed assessor at the Collegium medicum, a position that included work as a forensic expert. In 1777 he received a gold medal from the Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kongliga Vetenskaps Academien). He retired in 1779.
