Biography of Henry K. Silver
Henry K. Silver qualified in medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in 1942. He specialised in paediatrics and became a faculty member of the University of California and at Yale. He was appointed professor of paediatrics at the University of Colorado in 1957.
Silver was amongst the first to define the “battered child syndrome” and he also gave the original description of “deprivation dwarfism”. In 1965, with Loretta C. Ford, a registered nurse, he pioneered the nurse-practitioner movement and developed programmes for the training of other new categories of health care professionals, at the University of Colorado School of Nursing. In addition to these activities, he has written several widely used pediatric textbooks. The Henry K. Silver Award of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners is named for him.
