Friedrich Schlemm

Friedrich Schlemm began his studies at the anatomical-surgical institute of Braunschweig in 1813, becoming Alumnus in the anatomical theatre in 1814. He continued his studies in Berlin and received his doctorate there in 1821. He was habilitated as prosector at the University of Berlin in 1823, became professor extraordinary of anatomy in 1829 and full professor in 1833, a collaborator of Johannes Peter Müller (1801-1858). He was later appointer Geheimer Medicinal-Rath – privy medical counsellor.

Besides his practical anatomical activity he also gave courses in operative surgery, for a sustained period of time the only such courses given in Berlin. He became famous for his exercises in surgery on cadavers. He was also known for injecting red wax into arteries in order to make investigations easier.
