Biography of Viktor Schmieden
Viktor Schmieden studied at Freiburg, Munich, Berlin, and Bonn where he obtained his doctorate in 1897. He spent his hospital service and period as assistant at the pathological institute in Göttingen under Johannes Orth (1847-1923), at the Berlin surgical clinic under Ernst von Bergmann (1836–1907), at the surgical clinic in Bonn under Max Schede (1844-1902) and August Karl Gustav Bier (1861-1949). He was habilitated for surgery at Bonn in 1903, then at Berlin in 1907, becoming titular professor in 1907. In 1913 he accepted an invitation to Halle as ordentlicher professor, in 1919 to the same tenure at Frankfurt am Main.
Schmieden was a prolific writer. He was co-publisher of the Lehrbuch der Kriegschirurgie, Leipzig 1917; 2nd edition entitled Die deutsche Chirurgie im Weltkriege 1914-1918, 1920. With Ernst Ferdinand Sauerbruch (1875-1951) he published the 6th edition of Chirurgische Operationslehre by August Karl Gustav Bier, Heinrich F. W. Braun (1862-1934), and Hermann Kümmell (1852-1917), Berlin, 1933.
