Guido Currarino

Guido Currarino was born in Levanto, Italy in 1920. He entered medical school in Genoa in 1939. He qualified in medicine at the University of Genoa in 1945 and then spent two years training in pediatrics with professor Giovanni De Toni (1895-1973). He passed the Italian board of pediatrics in December 1947, then he decided to come to the United States and was able to secure an internship in St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, Maine.

In 1950, Currarino went to Syracuse for a pediatric residency and went on to become chief resident at Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. He then worked with Frederic N. Silverman (born 1914) in Cincinnati as a fellow in pediatric radiology. This was followed by a residency and then an assistant position in Boston Children's Hospital with professor Edward Blaine Duncan Neuhauser (born 1908).

In 1955 he was appointed to the staff of the Children's Hospital in Cincinnati and in 1960 he moved to the New York Hospital, Cornell University. Currarino became chief radiologist at the Dallas Children's Medical Center in 1965, and after retirement he continued part-time work at The Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas.

Together with Dr. Neuhauser, Currarino received the Gold Medal for an exhibit of Hypophosphatasia [The American Journal of Roentgenology, Radium Therapy and Nuclear Medicine, 1954, 72:875]. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Society for Pediatric Radiology in 1995 [Walter Berdon, Pediatric Radiology, 1995, 25: 662].
