Biography of Gentaro Mizuo
Gentaro Mizuo graduated from Tokyo University in 1901 and studied Ophthalmology under Professor Jujiro Komoto (1859-1938). In 1911 he received the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences from Tokyo University. In 1905 he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology of Osaka Medical School (presently Osaka University). During the years 1908-1910 he studied in Germany at Würzburg University under Professor Carl von Hess (1863-1923). He then returned to Osaka University.
In 1912 he instructed his student Bunpei Nakamura, then a second year resident, to examine the dark adaptation of a patient with Oguchi's disease. They found that the light sense of the night-blind patient improved when the patient's eye was covered for a long time.
After Mizuo's sudden death in 1913, Nakamura reported the phenomenon at the Congress of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society that year under the names Mizuo and Nakamura
