Biography of Viktor Ritter von Hacker
Viktor Ritter von Hacker studied in Vienna and received his medical degree there in 1878. He was an apprentice in surgery in Christian Albert Theodor Billroth’s (1829-1894) clinic and then worked thee for six years as an assistant. He then became primary surgeon to the Sophien-Spital. When Billroth performed his first resection of the pylorus followed by posterior gastrojejunostomy, Hacker assisted at the operation and later authored the first account of the procedure. In 1886 Hacker’s method of gastrostomy was presented in the periodical literature.
Hacker was habilitated for surgery in 1888, becoming professor extraordinary in 1895. In 1895 he was called to Innsbruck as ordinarius, and in 1903 to Graz, where he retired in 1923.
