Bblahoslav Bednàr was born on 18 December, 1916, in a big family of a Presbyterian minister and spent his whole life in Prague. He was MD and DSc from the Charles University of Prague and professor and chairman of the Hlava Institute of Pathology, Prague, from 1955 to 1983. He succeeded Professor Herman Sikl (1888-1955).
Professor Bednar is remembered for stimulating a post-war revival of Czechoslovak pathology. He organized the scientific activities of Czech pathologists, founded the official journal Czecho-Slovak Pathology, prepared international meetings, became a member of the Excerpta Medica Editorial Board, edited textbooks and established a valuable collection of reference histopathological slides.
His beloved Hlava Institute of Pathology was substantially modernized by him. Electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry started there during his years. The Bednar School of Czech Pathology provided no less than 13 professors for both Czech and foreign universities. He published 409 papers and 25 monographs.
