Biography of Christian Gerber
Christian Gerber studied medicine at the University of Bern from 1971 to 1977. In the following year he received his doctor degree, his thesis deals with total knee arthroplasty. After graduation he worked as intern in internal medicine in Herzogenbuchsee and at the University Hospital of Berne in the Neurology Department.
Gerber started his orthopaedic training with 2 years ion general surgery and traumatology in Davos. Then he was resident at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Berne. As fellow he stayed half a year at the University of Texas, San Antonio for shoulder surgery in 1984. Then he worked in Paris doing tumor and foot and ankle surgery at Cochin hospital and paediatric orthopaedics at Trousseau hospital.
In October 1985 he started as staff member at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Inselspital, the university hospital of Berne. He was appointed Privatdozent (lecturer) in 1988 and Titularprofessor (senior lecturer) in 1991. In 1992 he became chairman of the Orthopaedic department of the Hôpital cantonal in Fribourg. He changed to the Orthopaedic Department of the University of Zurich at Balgrist Clinic in 1995, where he is chairman and professor.
