Biography of Graeme Morgan
Associate Professor Graeme Morgan, MBBS, FRACP, FHGSA established one of Australia’s first genetic clinics. He studied medicine at The University og Sydney, graduating with honours in 1955.
He then trained in paediatrics at The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children and was later appointed Chief Resident Medical Officer. In 1963, he joined the Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital (now the Sydney Children’s Hospital) where, apart from working as a paediatrician, he opened one of Australia’s first genetics clinics. In addition to holding various roles at the Royal Hospital for Women, Westmead Hospital and Concord Hospital, Professor Morgan continued his work at the Sydney Children’s Hospital until 1999.
Professor Morgan moved to private practice in 1999, joining Genea as its first clinical geneticist. In addition to his role at Genea he is Conjoint Associate Professor in Human Genetics at The University of NSW; Emeritus Consultant Physician at the Sydney Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead; and Visiting Clinical Geneticist at Concord General Repatriation Hospital’s Department of Neurology. His special interests include pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and genetics of neurological and neuromuscular disorders. His focus on muscle disorders originates from involvement with the Muscular Dystrophy Association of NSW where he was Medical Director for 28 years and President for 5 years. He also established the Muscle Diseases Clinic at the Sydney Children’s Hospital, which was the only clinic of its type in NSW for many years. Professor Morgan assisted in setting up the Genetics Service Advisory Committee of NSW Health, and was the committee’s Founding Chairperson from 1987 to 1998.
Professor Morgan is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Division of Paediatrics) and Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (Clinical Genetics). He is well-published, having authored and co-authored almost 30 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
