Biography of Benjamin Franklin Baer

We thank E. Trasel "Trase" Rowland, M.D., Florida, for supplying us with further information about Benjamin Franklin Baer, who was his Greatgrandfather.

Benjamin Franklin Baer enlisted in the Union Army on March 7, 1864, aged 18, and mustered out on January 29, 1866 at City Point, Virginia. After the Civil War, Baer's first career was as a merchant, before he entered the study of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1876. He became an assistant to William Goodell (1829-1894), professor of clinical gynaecology at his alma mater, and served as an instructor in gynaecology from 1878 to 1855, when he became professor of gynaecology at the Philadelphia Polyclinic, of which he was a co-founder, and remained there for the rest of his professional life. He was a prolific writer.
