Biography of Paul Bar
Paul Bar became externe in 1875, interne des hôpitaux in 1876, and was a student and co-worker of Étienne Stéphane Tarnier (1828-1897) at the Maternité. In 1881 he authored his prize-winning thesis entitled Pathogénie de l'hydramnios. Two years later he became obstetrician at the hôpitaux and in 1887 received his appointment as agrégé d'obstetrique at the faculty. He was successively active at the Maternité de Tenon, St.-Louis, and St.-Antoine, giving courses on obstetrics. He was co-founder of the Société d'obstétrique de Paris.
Bar's scientific work concerns all areas of obstetrics, particularly that of eclampsis, twin pregnancies and craniotomy. In 1907 he succeeded Pierre-Constant Budin (1846-1907) as ordinarius of obstetrics at the medical faculty, and in 1926 became president of the Académie de Médecine. In his later year he concerned himself with the organisation of midwifery.
