Wilhelm Sander

Wilhelm Sander attended the universities of Breslau and Berlin, receiving his doctorate in 1860. He immediately concentrated his efforts in his speciality, psychiatry, and received a position in the Provinzial-Irrenanstalt in Siegburg (Fr. Hoffmann). In 1862 he became assistant in the lunatic station of the Charité under Wilhelm von Horn (1803-1871) and Wilhelm Griesinger (1817-1868) and from 1870 was secondary physician in the Berlin Irren-Verpflegungsanstalt. In 1879 he was entrusted the directorship of the Berliner Irren-Siechenanstalt at Dalldorf, becoming director of the entire institution in 1887. Sander retired in 1914. He had been Privatdozent from 1870, active as Medicinal-Assessor to the Provincial-Collegium from 1876, becoming Medicinalrath to the latter in 1884, and in 1894 was appointed Geheimer Medicinalrath – privy medical counsellor.
