Biography of Heinrich Meibom
Heinrich Meibom was the son of the physician Johann Heinrich Meibom (1590-1655). He studied in Helmstädt, Groningen, and Leyden, and then undertook scientific travels to Italy, France, and England. In 1663 he received his doctorate in Angers, in the heart of the Loire valley, and in 1664 assumed the chair of medicine at the University of Helmstädt, a position he had been offered as early as in 1661. From 1678 he was also professor of history and poetry at the same university, holding these positions until his death in 1700. Besides this, he taught archaeology, geometry, and philosophy.
His son, Brandanus Meibom (1678-1740) held chairs of pathology, semiotics, botany, and medicine.
Meibom wrote some 57 medical dissertations and occasional academic papers. Besides his medical papers, he also wrote on topics in his two others tenures, history and poetry.
