Biography of Otto Nägeli
Otto Nägeli was the son of the physician Otto Naegeli (1843-1922) and the brother of the dermatologist Oskar Naegeli (1885-1959). He studied in Lausanne, Zurich, Strassburg, and Bern. In 1897 he received his doctorate at Zurich, where he was habilitated for internal medicine in 1900. He was professor of medicine at Tübingen in Germany and then ordinarius and director of the medical clinic at Zurich University from 1918. When he retired in 1937, he was succeeded by the Swiss internist Wilhelm Löffler (1887-1972).
Nägeli made many contributions to haematological diagnostic methods and leukaemia. He reported leukopenia in typhus and wrote a textbook on blood disorders.
Besides his own works, Nägeli was a collaborator in Josef von Mering’s (1849-1908) Lehrbuch der inneren Medizin (Jena, 1901), Karl Albert Ludwig Aschoff’s (1866-1942) Pathologische Anatomie; ein Lehrbuch für Studierende und Aerzte (2 volumes, Jena, Fischer, 1909), and Handbuch der Krankheiten des Blutes und der blutbildenden Organe.
