Biography of John Montgomery Baldy
John Montgomery Baldy was Professor of gynaecology at the Philadelphia Polyclinic. He is best remembered for having performed one of the earliest, albeit unsuccessful, gastrectomies in the United States (1898) and for modifying John Webster’s (1863-1950) method of treating retrodisplacement of the uterus (1903).

Operation performed by Baldy in 1893. He refers to a claim in Journal of the American Medical Association, 1898, 30: 341-344 giving credit for the first excision of the stomach in America to A. C. Barnays (1854-1907). While Baldy probably deserves priority, the point is moot since neither Baldy's nor Barnay's operations were successful.
