Biography of Henry Lewis Jaffe
Henry Lewis Jaffe graduated from the university School of Medicine in New York 1920. After his internship he took up a junior post in pathology at the Montefiore Hospital, and at the age of 28 years he was appointed pathologist and director of laboratories at the Hospital for Joint Diseases as pathologist and director of laboratories. He remained in this post until his retirement 40 years later.
A skilled histopathologist, Jaffe made numerous important contributions to the understanding of the pathophysiology of endocrine bone disease and the developmental pathology of the skeleton. He published more than 130 medical articles and wrote two classic books, Tumors and Tumorous Conditions of Bones and Joints (1958) and Metabolic, Degenerative and Inflammatory Diseases of Bones and Joints (1972).
As a person, Jaffe was known for his forceful character and strong views. He published more than 130 medical articles.
