Biography of Jan van der Hoeve

After graduating from the University of Leyden, Jan van der Hoeve in 1903 obtained a doctorate at the University of Bern. He served as a military medical officer from 1905 to 1913, and subsequently was appointed as professor of ophthalmology at the University of Groningen. In 1918 he moved to the same tenure at his alma mater in Leyden. Van der Hoeve was the first to introduce the concept of phacomatoses as a group of congenital disorders with ramifications in many tissues. As a person he was described as courteous and genial.

He received an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh and the Sir William Mackenzie medal for ophthalmic research, and in 1932 he was elected president of the Physical Section of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science.
