Baelz' cheilitis
Related people
A rare, acquired disease with onset in childhood or early adolescence, characterized by enlargement, hardening, and finally eversion of the lip (usually the lower one) leading to exposure of the opening of the accessory salivary glands, which themselves become enlarged and sometimes nodular, appearing as small red macules with dilated follicular orifices exuding mucoid or mucopurulent fluid. The suppurative form is sometimes referred to as Volkmann's cheilitis. Aetiology unknown; may be a developmental defect; frequent association with Ascher's syndrome. First description and naming by Paul Gersson Unna and von Baelz.
Volkmann is probably Alfred Wilhelm Volkmann, German physiologist, 1801-1877.
