John Goodsir’s paper on “Centres of nutrition” anticipates to a certain extent the cell doctrine afterwards developed by Rudolf Virchow. Goodsir insisted on the importance of the cell as the centre of nutrition and declared that the cell is divided into a number of departments. He was described as "one of the earliest and most acute observers of cell life". Virchow dedicated the first edition of his Cellularpathologie to Goodsir. - R. Remak:
