A standardized test used to assess cardiac function, particularly by taking ECG before and after exercise.
For 90 seconds the patient repeatedly walks up and down a small stair or footstool consisting of a middle step and twi sidesteps; the height of the steps is 23 cm. The exercise is don according to a scheme set up on the basis of weight and age. Pulse rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram are measured before and after the test. The test has now generally been replaced with use of a treadmill.
