Trousseau's syndrome
Related people
Historical, no longer commonly used term for venous thrombosis of the upper and lower extremities associated with visceral cancer. It is classically associated with pancreatic cancer, but other tumours, particularly adenocarcinomas, can cause it. Trousseau diagnosed it in himself.
Trousseau in 1861 stated that if the diagnosis of a suspected carcinoma of an internal organ could not be verified, the sudden and spontaneous appearance of thrombophlebitis in a large vein afforded necessary proof for diagnosis.
Nygaard-Brown syndrome, or essential thrombophilia, is entered as a separate entity under Kaare Kristian Nygaard, Norwegian-American physician, 1903-1989.
