An obsolete term for a form of hypertrophy of a part of the body with various associated disorders. It may involve a single small part of the body, such as a finger; a whole system, such as the nervous system, the muscular system, the skeletal system, or the vascular system; or half of the body with enlargement of several systems (hemigigantism). Males more frequently affected; onset from birth, but may become accentuated at puberty. Asymptomatic or variable according to signs. Frequently, ocular disorders, cutaneous lesions, adrenal cortex tumours, Wilms tumour, kidney defects, reduced capacity to thermal regulation, mental retardation, and other disorders. Some authors use the synonym Steiner's syndrome only when schizophrenia is present.
