Sudden onset of vertigo, gradually becoming paroxysmal, usually in association with asthenic symptoms. Head movements enhance the symptoms. Signs: fever, gait and stance disturbed. Absent response to caloric stimulation on one side, nystagmus with quick component to the opposite side. Normal hearing; occasionally response positive on both sides. The disease occurs in conjunction with encephalitis. Occurs in two forms, ons is characterized by gastrointestinal complications, the other by upper respiratory tract infection.
