The clinical picture is characterized by recurrent, chronic, haemorrhages of the lung with periods of severe, hypochromic anaemia. Occasionally, recurrent fever and abdominal pain. Onset is sudden, usually in infancy or childhood. Equal sex distribution in children. The condition also occurs in adults where there is a sex difference (M:F = 2:1).
Ceelen first mentioned the disease picture at a meeting of of the Pathological Society in 1921. The term "Ceelen-Gellerstedt" was introduced in 1944 by P. Selander.
