An infectious disease of the skin caused by agents of the poxivirus group. The disorder occurs chiefly in children and may affect any part of the body. The lesions are characterized by hyperplasia and degeneration of the epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes, presenting pinhead- to pea-sized, pearly white, umbilicate nodules that exude waxy material. Transmission is by direct contact with the lesions, through sexual intercourse, and through fomites. Histologically, the lesions are marked by large, cytoplasmic, viral inclusions (mollusscum bodies) in the epithelial cells. (Jablonski)
